What Are We Doing?
We have just finished travelling around Spain for 192 days. This was a fantastic experience and we enjoyed every minute. We are now home for a short visit before heading off to Iceland and the USA.
When I first started to research travelling, one of the things I looked for first was how much travelling actually costs. Trying to find out what people spend each day or what type of budget they give themselves. So I thought I would complete a blog with the same information, hoping that it will be useful to someone out there.
Below is a breakdown of what we spent during our 192 days in Spain.
£664 ACCOMMODATION 11.5%
In 192 days we only spent £664 on accommodation, some people spend that on a place to stay just for one week. The way we kept this cost down was by doing Workaways for the majority of our time. We also sought out free places to stay where we could. Find free accommodation and your time and money will go much further.
£1308 GROCERIES 22%
This was our largest outgoing and I would not have expected it to be any different. Cooking for yourself is so much cheaper than eating out all of the time.
£110 TRAVEL 1.9%
We didn't spend much on travel due to having our own car with us. If you were using public transport on your trip this cost would be much higher. To help keep this cost down you could hitchhike, walk as much as you can or cycle. Also by staying in one place for a longtime this will also help keep your travel costs down, this is slow travel.
£429 FUEL 7.5%
Our car was our main mode of transport. We tried to not use it all of the time as we were conscious about spending money. In the last 8 weeks when we started to move around more this area increased a lot. On average we spent £2.23 per day on petrol which is still cheaper than a day rider for one person.
£262 ALCOHOL 4.5%
Neither of us are big drinkers and I think the amount we spent on alcohol reflects that. If you like to drink then you will need to make sure you budget a lot more for that. Drinking regularly when you travel eats away at your money.
£253 COFFEE & CAKE 4%
It's funny that we almost spent the same on coffee(and green tea) than we did on alcohol. We didn't do this everyday as again it can waste your money. However every now and then it is nice to do and it's a great way to go and mingle with the locals and to try out local specialties at bakeries etc. People sit and drink coffees in bars almost a such as they do a beer.
£563 EATING OUT 10%
We only ate out on a few occasions. Most of the time we found it hard to eat out because we felt so guilty for spending the money. We did however go into holiday mode a few times and treat ourselves. On the last few days in Spain we ate out everyday to give ourselves a little break from cooking on our little camping stove. If you can cook a much for yourself as possible.
£166 ACTIVITIES 3%
Lucky for us our hobbies are free and our trips are often lead by our hobbies. This means that most of our days are filled with free things to do. The only time we have spent money is when we have had to get our bike tyre fixed, by a climbing guide book or get our climbing shoes resoled. If you have a hobby such as walking, rock climbing, cycling, surfing, yoga etc try and plan a trip centred around them to keep costs down but your days full.
