What Are We Doing?
Wow our final few weeks in Spain were fantastic. We explored so many places, we stayed with a really cool and inspiring family in Barcelona. They were living around 40 minutes away from the city and managing to live pretty much self sufficiently. They had so many vegetables, they kept bees, hens and even grew their own tobacco. They were such kind people, they let us stay with them for free. They had never met us and went off a recommendation from when we did our second Workaway with Kev and Roberta. There are some super kind people in the world.
We visited the famous climbing destination and historical town of Siurana, such a beautiful place. Camped in some old ruins in the tiny village of Abella De La Conca, we got to see huge vultures swooping over us everyday. Cycled through the streets of Pamplona, where the famous San Fermin takes place each year. Watched surfers in San Sebastian and ate delicious pinxtos. Then we finally ended our time in an area of Spain known as green Spain named Asturias. Here we lived in a car park in Teverga for three weeks. The climbing was amazing, the scenery was fantastic and the local community was just perfect, we loved it!
So understandably in our final month we almost hit our budget of £900, which is still a really low budget. This budget still only allows us to spend £15 per day each. If it hadn't been for the free camping in Teverga we would have easily doubled our monthly budget. Camping in Spain is so expensive and cities eat up your money. We had a great time though and we hope you enjoy reading the blogs about each place.
€212/ £207 ACCOMMODATION 25%
Thank goodness we managed to find a free places to stay. Even with twenty free days of accommodation we still managed to spend over £200 on places to sleep.
€249/ £192 GROCERIES 21%
Just the usual on the food shopping this month. Even though we ate out a little more than usual we still cooked a lot, even when we were in the cities.
€50/ £38 TRAVEL 4%
We caught the train a couple of times into Barcelona and in San Sebastian we paid for parking.
€147/ £113 FUEL 12%
We drove miles and miles in the final weeks so understandably we spent a lot on fuel.
€100/ £77 ALCOHOL 8.5%
We spent time in some beautiful cities this month which meant we drank a little bit more than usual. We found a few craft ale bars in Barcelona which were nice. Then in San Sebastian and Pamplona we drank a few drinks with our pintxos. We only ever had a couple of drinks altogether though, so we didn't go crazy and get drunk.
€103/£79 COFFEE & CAKE 9%
Ha when you look at these figures it seems insane that we spent so much on coffee and cake. We were however in a lot of cities so understandably we stopped off for a cuppa and a refuel. You have to try out the local bakeries in Spain, each region has their own specialties. Living in a car park also means you need to escape it every now and then to seek shelter from rain and to charge your phones.
€137/ £105 EATING OUT 12%
We tried a lot of local dishes in the places we visited, which was mostly pintxos. So I guess we ate a lot of pintxos. In Pamplona we tried oxtail which was delicious, but I think that was our only actual meal out.
€30/£23 ACTIVITIES 2.5%
We bought the new Roca Verde climbing guide book when we arrived in Teverga.
